The Marine Trades Association of New Jersey (MTA/NJ), comprised of over 330 marine related businesses, is a non-profit trade organization dedicated to promoting and protecting the recreational marine industry and waterways in the State of New Jersey.
Established in 1972, the MTA/NJ is dedicated to promote the interests of the industry as a whole for the benefit of its individual members and the consumers whom they serve. This goal is realized by fostering among the membership: the free exchange of ideas and information, mutual cooperation and friendship between businesses, and instruction and schooling in technical matters concerning the marine industry and introduction of new marine equipment and accessories. In addition, the Association promotes cooperative efforts in public relations, legislative activities, industry exhibits and shows, updating of Coast Guard rules and regulations, and other matters of mutual interest.
The MTA/NJ maintains a year round fully staffed office providing current industry information. The office staff is available to assist members in solving marine related problems while maintaining contact with environmental groups, law enforcement, state and federal agencies and concerned officials.
Through the Association's lobbyist, The Princeton Public Affairs Group, the MTA/NJ monitors legislation affecting the marine industry and notifies members of urgent issues with legislative updates. The Association seeks new legislation and modification of existing legislation in order to serve the best interest of the public and the marine trades throughout the State of New Jersey.
The MTA/NJ has a visible presence in the State with seats on the DEP Tidelands Resource Council, the Industrial Stormwater Pollution Advisory Group, Barnegat Bay Estuary Program, as well as county and state work force development committees.
The MTA/NJ serves in an advisory capacity to Vocational Technical Schools, the New Jersey Sea Grant Program, the National Boating Infrastructure Grant Program, the I BOAT NJ Program, various technical development boards, Clean Ocean Action, NMMA’s Boat Show Advisory Committee, and the Maritime Advisory Council.
The MTA/NJ supervises the Clean Vessel Act in our state which awards grants for the installation of pump out stations at private marinas. The MTA/NJ is active on the national scene with MOAA, MRAA, NMMA, the Recreational Fishing Alliance, the Marine Environmental Education Foundation (MEEF), and the National Marine Trades Council.

The MTA/NJ has taken a leadership role in developing a strong voice in the New Jersey State House. A strong presence in Trenton results in our state legislators being more responsive to New Jersey's recreational boating industry. More often than not we are faced with a government which is working at odds with the interests of the recreationl boating community. Because of this, a Political Action Committee (PAC) has been formed as a means to exert more influence on elected officials and as a means of stimulating communication between candidates for office and the recreational boating industry from which we earn our living. Your contribution is vital to the ability of our industry to successfully communicate our concerns to candidates for public office.
What Is the Marine Trades Association of New Jersey’s Political Action Committee? The MTA/NJ PAC is a non-partisan, non-profit, political action committee formed to raise voluntary contributions to use in sup- porting candidates for state and local elect- ive offices who share boating concerns and are sensitive to expanding the recreational boating business and opportunities. What Is
The Purpose of MTA/NJ PAC? The MTA/NJ PAC ensures members the opportunity to participate in the election and support of candidates who make decisions affecting our business and the New Jersey recreational boating industry.
Who Decides How PAC Funds Are Spent? The MTA/NJ PAC Board is made up of MTA/NJ members who, as recreational boating industry employers, have the same concerns as you do. The MTA/NJ PAC committee decides which candidates to support based on input from MTA/NJ members, voting records on key issues, interviews and recommendations from the MTA/NJ lobbyist and Board of Directors.
The Criteria that the MTA/NJ PAC uses for supporting candidates are: (1) candidates who have consistently supported the MTA/NJ; (2) candidates who are supportive of a strong business climate where the recreational boating industry can continue to grow and prosper. New Jersey PAC Regulations Voluntary contributions to MTA/NJ PAC must be paid by check. The MTA/NJ PAC cannot accept cash.
Each contribution must be accompanied by a MTA/NJ PAC application including the contributor’s name and address and the total amount of the contribution. Personal Benefit Personal contributions will give you the confidence of knowing you have contributed to the efforts of the recreational boating industry from which you derive your income. For more information or to obtain a PAC enrollment form, please contact the MTA/NJ office at 732-292-1051 or E-mail us at: info@mtanj.org Click here to open and print a PAC brochure. Your personal contribution is your investment in the future of recreational boating in New Jersey!
